On this Grand Week, The Grand on Central features La Follette Church of God’s Food Pantry ministry

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – “What’s God gonna do today?” That’s the question the La Follette Church of God’s Bishop Michael Dent and Administrative Assistant Pam Olivio ask each day. Recently, the answer to that question was “start a weekly food pantry.”

“Through our quarterly food give-a-way, we’re feeding about 12,000 people a year,” said Pastor Dent. That’s made possible by church funds, added the pastor. However, Dent and the church decided that every quarter was not enough. That’s where the idea of a three-day a week food pantry originated.

This week marks the first week of the food pantry ministry. Although the days the pantry will be open are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9am until 3pm, it officially opens this week on Wednesday.

“A 26-foot box truck will deliver food to the church on Mondays. Given this is our first week, the truck will be here today, and we’ll spend Tuesday this first week getting organized to open on Wednesday,” said Dent.

Having new shelf space available in classrooms off the gymnasium affords room to store the food, and there are church members who step up to man the pantry. “Susan Shields oversees all this, and Larry Johnson organizes the loads of food,” said the pastor.

Classrooms are right off the gym floor.

In addition to the new food pantry, the church also provides emergency food boxes. “There are those times folks need help getting over the hump, and these emergency food boxes meet that need. It’s canned food, chips, drinks, supplies and such,” said Dent.

It’s the church on the hill across from the high school.

“As a church, we’re carrying out God’s work; deliver the message of the kingdom, feed the hungry, help heal the sick and give hope,” said the pastor.

“This food pantry’s gonna be big,” said Bishop Dent.
