JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Your Lady Cougars traveled to Maverick Gym on Friday night for the second battle of the season with Anderson County. The Lady Cougars won the first meeting at John Brown Gym back on December 1st by a score 63-40. This game, while not only being a big-time rivalry matchup, had a little more at stake.

It was Lady Cougar Head Coach Jason Kitts’s homecoming to AC. Kitts moved to Anderson County, played high school ball as a Maverick, and was an assistant coach on both the boys and girls teams before taking the head coaching position at Campbell.

Also, with a win, Campbell would surpass their win total from last year (14), and match their best start to a season since 2018.

Anderson though struck the first blow against Campbell, quickly gaining an 11-5 lead over the Orange-and-Blue, but the Lady Cougars would have a run in store. Through the remainder of the first quarter and all of the second, the Lady Cougars, led in large part by Saylor Hutcheson as well as Bella Lester, Lacey Pemberton, and Carley Kitts, went off on a 25-4 run to gain a 30-15 on the Lady Mavs at halftime.

In the third, the Lady Cougars kept up the pace. Freshman point guard Jayden Kitts would find the open Lady Cougar, and Campbell’s possessions would result in points. Anderson County had a productive offensive quarter as well. The Lady Mavs matched Campbell’s points in the third quarter, keeping the Lady Cougar lead at 15.

In the postgame interview Head Coach Jason Kitts mentioned that basketball was “a game of runs”. Campbell had theirs near the end of the first and into the second quarter. It was now Anderson County’s turn for a run of their own.

After the Lady Cougars took the lead 52-34 in the fourth, Anderson rattled off a 14-2 run to end the game. Also in the postgame interview Coach Kitts said that the clock couldn’t tick fast enough. Fortunately, time expired, and the Lady Cougars left Anderson County with a 54-48 win.

Campbell’s offense was led by an incredible performance from Saylor Hutcheson, your local realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game. Hutch racked up an impressive 22 points in Friday night’s win, 14 of those coming in the first half. Carley Kitts and Bella Lester were second in scoring with 10 points apiece. Lacey Pemberton put up six points. Jayden Kitts and Aleeah Woodson both had three points apiece.

Campbell now improves to 15-2 on the season and sweeps Anderson County in the season series. As for the Lady Mavericks, they fall to 9-7.

Up next for the Lady Cougars is the final game before the district gauntlet. Campbell returns back to John R. W Brown Gymnasium on Monday to tussle with South Doyle. JV Boys action starts at 4:30pm.
