NEW TAZEWELL, TN (WLAF) – Your Campbell County Cougars, 2-0 on the year, traveled to New Tazewell to participate in game one of the KOC/Elevation Invitational at Claiborne High School. The first opponent for the Orange-and-Blue was the 0-1 Hancock County Indians.
Listen to Josh Parker’s call of the game HERE on demand from WLAF.
The Indians kept it close throughout the first quarter. The Cougars, though, would hang on to an 18-12 lead at the end of the first. Campbell then rattled off a 22-6 run, pushing their lead out to 40-18. In the second quarter, the moment that Cougar fans had been waiting for finally happened. Luke Browning got the ball in transition, leaped and flushed the basketball with two hands. Browning recorded his first dunk of the year, and moments later, almost had a second. Browning would finish with 15 points. Heading into halftime, the Cougars lead Hancock County 43-24.
The second half was much of the same as the first as Campbell’s offense remained hot. The Cougars outscored the Indians 19-8 to lead Hancock County 62-32 at the end of the 3rd.
In the fourth quarter, many of the young Cougars had the opportunity to step on the floor at Claiborne High. Just like the Lady Cougars game on Monday, every available player wearing orange-and-blue received playing time. Campbell would score 12 more points in the 4th, propelling itself to a 74-47 victory over Hancock County.
Luke Browning tied with Jordan Day, the local realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game, for the title of leading scorer. Both had 15 points in the contest. Gavin Cox tallied 13 points on the night; Tyler Kitts had 10; Freshman Will Croley had 6, Cole Miller scored 5 points; Jake Hatmaker and Logan Day tied with 3 points apiece; Ethan Dorton and Dylan Ford rounded out the scoring column with each having 2 points. Brady Hatmaker, Keegan Nelson, Gabe St. John, and Gavin Owens all played but did not score.
With the victory, Campbell, 3 & 0, advances to the winner’s bracket where they will face off against Northview Academy (3 & 1), 78-48 winners over the Scott Highlanders. Campbell and Northview each have wins over Lenoir City.
