JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – County Commissioner Dewayne Kitts said he would like to honor BSA Troop 310 with a proclamation at next week’s commission meeting on Monday evening.

“They do a fantastic job at the Veterans Breakfasts and throughout the county, and I would like for us to recognize them for all they do,” Dewayne Kitts said.

Commission chairman Johnny Bruce and other commissioners agreed.

“We deeply appreciate all you do,” Bruce said.

Commissioner Scott Kitts thanked the scouts as well for their various presentations of the colors at events throughout the county and their many services.

BSA Troop 310 Scout Leader Chris Thacker and his son, assistant scout leader Stewart Thacker addressed the commission briefly.

“It’s our pleasure, the Scouts have a slogan, do a good turn daily, and that’s what we try to do,” Chris Thacker said.

According to Scoutmaster Chris Thacker, the Scouts had planned to attend a commission meeting soon anyway to fulfill a merit badge so they can work on Eagle Scout status.

Scouts from BSA Troop 310 will attend next week’s meeting and at the end, be recognized with a proclamation by the commission.

Chris Thacker said the scouts did not know they were going to be recognized and just thought they would be attending the meeting to earn a merit badge in civil government.

“It will be a great surprise for them,” Chris Thacker said.

Assistant Scout leader Stewart Thacker said over an eight year time span he had passed from being a scout to an assistant scoutmaster and thanked the county for their support of Scouting.

According to Chris Thacker, over eight years local BSA Scouts had “cataloged over 10,000 hours of community service projects in the county, with Stewart completing 1, 400 hours.”

He also spoke about the positive impact that scouting has on participants.

“We had over 100 Scouts come through the program and 99 percent completed high school. Many go on to college and several have taken jobs in the community. One of our Scouts is a certified EMT, one is a new welding instructor at TCAT and another is a local firefighter; it is something to be proud of.  We couldn’t do it without all the support from you guys and the community,” Chris Thacker said.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/12/2023-6AM)
