Four lead changes in Campbell’s second win of the season

SEYMOUR, TN (WLAF) – Campbell County has trailed and held leads in its first two games, and tonight’s third game of the season continued that trend. After an opening game drive and score, the Cougars went up 7-0 only to see The King’s Academy (TKA) score 13 unanswered points to go ahead 13-7. Watch the game HERE on demand.

The Lions lead was short-lived as Campbell scored on its next possession, its last of the first half, to take a 14-13 advantage to the locker room.

First half highlights include Keegon Cowan’s 89 yards on seven carries along with the game’s first touchdown (unofficially 12 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns on the night). Luke Carroll netted six tackles including a tackle for loss (9 tackles and a TFL for the game). Gavin Owens had the strip of a TKA ball carrier with the fumble recovered by Michael Ensley. Timmy Gibson’s 35 yard kick-off return started the game setting up the Cougars at their 47 yard line. Rylan Sanders nailed both his point after touchdown tries. Landen Hensley had a five yard run for a touchdown along with a pass to Gabe St. John that The Saint caught and carried for 40 yards on the second scoring drive of the first half.

TKA won the toss and deferred. So Campbell kicked off to start the second half, and the Lions promptly snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head, and Gavin Owens forced a safety. After the kick to Campbell, Number 34 Keegon Cowan raced for a 34 yard touchdown to push Campbell to its largest lead at 23-13.

The Lions roared back scoring 20 straight points to gain its largest lead at 33-23 with 4:47 to play. It was a night of runs. TKA score 13 straight followed by 16 in a row from Campbell. TKA posted 20 unanswered points only to see Campbell tally the last 13 points of the night.

At the 3:51 mark, Landen Hensley found Luke Lindsay in the near corner of the end zone for a Campbell touchdown. Rylan Sanders PAT pulled Campbell to within 33-30.

Campbell stopped The King’s Academy after an unsuccessful onside kick. The Cougars took over at their 16 following the TKA punt. The Cougars converted a 4th and inches at the Campbell 44 on a run by Owens. From the 47, Hensley tossed a pass to Gavin Owens, and he took off for pay dirt. However, two separate penalties wiped off the touchdown, and the umpire walked off 30 yards putting Campbell at its 17. On first and 40 from the 17, Hensley found Timmy Gibson across the middle. Gibson grabbed the throw and made his way down field breaking tackles and out running the Lions to score the winning points.

TKA finished with a flurry. The Lions drove downfield and were close enough for a Hail Mary in the closing seconds. K.J. Chadwell made the game saving tip away of a pass that was destined to be caught in the end zone.

Campbell improves to 2 & 1 while TKA slips to 0 & 3. The Cougars host Clinton on Friday for their first Region 3 game. TKA plays at Lenoir City. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/01/2023-6AM)
