JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – “That’s a record,” declared courthouse veteran Sue Nance about the brevity of a commission workshop.

Nance, a county commissioner who served many years as Campbell County Commission’s clerk, should be considered an expert when it comes to meetings.

The commission held its workshop Monday night and the meeting lasted less than 45 minutes.

Among the topics presented to be considered at the commission’s full meeting next Monday were:

  • An online reservation system for RV parks.
  • The upcoming surfer competition.
  • A suggested Brian Henegar Day to honor the LaFollette man who won the Jeopardy! game show three days in a row.
  • A proposal to add Melvin Hollow Road and Chaska Road to the LaFollette Utilities water line projects.
  • The possibility of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency creating a local archery range.

Sheriff Wayne Barton reported he is in the process of acquiring grants that would allow Amerimed Emergency Medical Services to provide transportation for jail inmates who need to receive mental health assessments, both voluntary and involuntary. County deputies currently provide the transport, which sometimes requires trips to facilities distant as Memphis. The proposal was referred to the commission’s jail committee.

Former County Commissioner Ralph Davis asked commissioners to consider allocating a $9,000 remainder in the veterans affairs budget to be divided equally to the Jellico and Campbell County honor guards, who Davis said provide ceremonial duties at as many as 70 veterans’ funerals per year. The request was referred to the budget committee for consideration for the 2023-24 budget.

Commissioner Zach Marlow said he learned after talking with officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation that the newest projected completion date for the Highway 63 improvements is now April 2024.

The full commission meets next Monday at 6 pm at the courthouse in Jacksboro. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/11/2023-6AM)
