Wlaf1450KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF) – A last second bucket, a three point loss and a two point nail biter, all have been heartbreakers for the Campbell Lady Cougars in this young season. However, on Monday at Carter, the Lady Cougars found a way to win a close game, so close, the game ended in a 38-38 tie before Campbell outscored the Lady Hornets 9-3 in overtime to ring up the win.
Campbell started cold, ice cold at times, in the first half before Carley Kitts lit a fire torching the net with five second half threes. Kitts struggled to drain a first half three before the barrage began.
As time wound down, Carter was ahead 38-36 and missed a lay up. Lacey Pemberton claimed the rebound and was fouled. Pemberton missed the front end of the one and one, Carter snagged the rebound and Destiny Rutherford promptly stole the ball. Rutherford tossed the ball to Kitts, and Kitts was fouled. Kitts knocked down both free throws forcing overtime at 38-38.
Carter took the early lead at 39-38, Campbell retook the advantage at 41-39 and never trailed again. Campbell outscored Carter in the extra session 9 to 3 to win it 47-41 improving to 4 & 4.
The game’s leading scorer was Kitts with 20 followed by nine from Saylor Hutcheson who hit key free throws down the stretch. Bella Lester fouled out in overtime but hit a big three in the OT before she exited and ended up with seven points. Lacey Pemberton had five, Emma Brandenburg, saddled with fouls, scored the first two of the game and then two more late for a total of four. Rutherford had two points to go along with several steals, many forced turnovers and deflections.
On Tuesday, the Cougars 4 & 5 (0 & 2) and Lady Cougars 4 & 4 (1 & 1) host Scott in non-district games.
