KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF) – The Campbell County Cougars are no longer undefeated after the host Hardin Valley Academy Hawks dropped the Cougars to 4 & 1 following a 74-49 basketball game on Tuesday. The HVA Lady Hawks broke open a close game to win going away 65-34 over the Campbell Lady Cougars. The Cougar JVs faired no better in a 52-40 loss.

Campbell’s John Long, who had a double-double, powered through points to jump start Campbell at 2-0. Hardin Valley answered with a three, and it was back and forth in the first quarter with Campbell having a four point lead while the Hawks were up by five at one stage. It was Campbell 17 Hardin Valley 16 after the first quarter. That would end up being the Cougars last lead.

HVA built a 10 point advantage, 34-24, at the half. Long posted 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter as Campbell chopped the double-digit difference down to six at 34-28. From there, HVA outscored Campbell the rest of the way 40 to 21 to claim a 74-29 victory.

Long was tops for the Cougars with 18 and 12 rebounds while Devon Jones added 11 followed by four points each from the Gavins, Gavin Cox and Gavin Owens. Jordan Day and David Adkins each marked down three. Hyrum Hinckley, Will Lester and Adama Sanogo scored two each.

Hardin Valley improves to 4 & 1 while Campbell looks to get back on the winning track Friday at Williamsburg with a Cougars only game with Whitley. West hosts HVA Friday.

The Lady Cougars saw Emma Brandenburg score the first 11 points with Hardin Valley working its way to a 19-13 lead after one quarter. Once the Lady Hawks regained the lead at 9-7, it never trailed again.

Campbell was down seven at intermission, and then made it a 32-28 game early in the third quarter. From there, HVA scored 33 of the final 39 points.

Brandenburg, with early foul troubles, was best for Campbell with 11 while Saylor Hutcheson rang up eight followed by five from Bella Lester and four from Carley Kitts. Two points each came from Lexi Morris and Lacey Pemberton. Finishing with a point a piece were Destiny Rutherford and Reagan Stanfill.

The loss sends the Lady Cougars to 2 & 3. After a week away from game action, the Lady Cougars return home to start the district schedule with the West Lady Rebels. HVA plays at West on Friday in a non-district game.

On Friday from Williamsburg, Jim Freeman and Don Atherton send you all the live radio and television coverage beginning at 7:30pm on the WLAF-Doyle’s Tire Shop.
