NASHVILLE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – “While Tennessee has made the headlines recently, especially in Memphis, the Legislature was busy earlier this year passing the Truth in Sentencing Bill, HB 2656, which I co-sponsored,” said State Representative Dennis Powers.

The new law that went into effect July 1 makes sure that dangerous criminals serve their time, rather than get out early and commit more crimes.  There are 14 of the most heinous crimes on the list and although it will cost an estimated $41 million per year to keep them incarcerated, it will be worth it.

“While Tennessee has made the headlines recently, especially in Memphis, the Legislature was busy earlier this year passing the Truth in Sentencing Bill, HB 2656, which I co-sponsored,” said State Representative Dennis Powers.

“Keeping citizens safe is one of the top priorities of government, and we should never have to hear what I heard the Mayor of Memphis say this week, ‘If only the perpetrator had been required to serve the full sentence, these victims would be alive today’,” stated Rep. Powers. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/09/2022-6AM)

  1. Thank you Dennis! It’s time for our Government to do their job in keeping Citizens safe. It’s probably the most important thing that we do extremely poorly. I’m still waiting for executions to be carried out in a speedy manner. ❤️🙏🏼🇺🇸

    1. Thanks, Chuck. In 2014, I sponsored a bill that said it the drugs were unavailable to carry out an execution, then they would use our electric chair, which has never been ruled unconstitutional. Now, we have the drugs, but the delay has been caused by the correct formulation. Next year, I will propose a bill that will allow us to use the electric chair due to any delay in the drug protocol. There is no need for these prisoners to sit on death row for 30 or 40 years at the taxpayers’ expense.
