LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Campbell County High School Athletic Trainer Karen Morton was the guest speaker at the South Campbell County Rotary Club luncheon on Tuesday.

This is a related story on Morton from 2019 that includes interviews with Tennova La Follette Medical Center CEO Mark Cain and Campbell High Football Coach Justin Price.

She spoke about her passion of taking care of Campbell County’s young athletes.

Morton has been certified as an athletic trainer for 22 years and has worked at both the collegiate and high school level. She has spent the last seven years working at CCHS through her contract at Tennova Medical.

According to Morton, “God led her to the position in Campbell County.”

Morton said a lot of her work takes place “before and after events and behind the scenes.”

Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions.

She makes sure the athletes are doing proper stretching, and working hard to prevent injuries and accidents during games and practices.  When they do occur, Morton is on the front line providing medical care for the athletes. Often times she can assess the damage and take care of it in-house.  If not, she refers the athletes to a physician.

She is the only athletic trainer in the county and takes care of 250 athletes playing 16 sports at CCHS.

Morton is also training several students in a student athlete trainer course. The students take first aid courses and have to have an interest in sports medicine or the medical field.

“I love working with the people at Tennova, and I love working with the coaches and students at CCHS,” Morton said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/04/2022-6AM)
