A tree ripped the top off of the car on impact, according to officials.

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Authorities said a man driving under the influence (DUI) is responsible for the death of a La Follette woman, his passenger, in a 1:20am Sunday car wreck.

The preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol said 38-year-old David John Vegal, Jr. of North 21st Street, La Follette was driving a 2007 Gray Toyota Corolla north on Pinecrest Road. The Toyota veered off the left side of the road, struck a standing tree, overturned and came to a final uncontrolled rest on the driver’s side.

Vegal was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Forty-year- old Jessica N. Ivy was not wearing seat belt. Ivy appears to have died instantly, according to officials.

Vegal is facing charges of DUI, vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/27/2022-6PM)
