JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Campbell had home court advantage, a huge crowd and a hot start. What more could a team want on district tournament championship night? A hot finish. But it was not meant to be. Untimely turnovers, many unforced, and a five-point possession for Oak Ridge early in the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats all they needed to begin pulling away from Campbell all the way to a 68-47 win and the District 3-AAAA tournament crown.

Cougar Nate Walden opened the night with a driving lay up as the Cougars scored 10 of the first 12 points taking an early 10 to 2 lead. Oak Ridge then rattled off the next 15 points over a six-minute span before Spencer Boshears uncorked a three to chop the ‘Cats lead down to four at 17-13. After trailing 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, Campbell scored 14 of the next 25 points to make it a 28-24 score at halftime with Oak Ridge still in front.

Both teams traded punches for the first five minutes of the second half as the Cougars clawed back to regain the lead and the momentum at 32-31on a Zac Brady put back and free throw. Boshears followed with a circus shot to push Campbell ahead 34-31. Back-to-back buckets by Oak Ridge put the Wildcats ahead 35-34. Another Walden basket see-sawed the Cougars on top 36-35. The fifth and final lead change came at 37-36 when Oak Ridge scored a field goal with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

Oak Ridge finished the third quarter on a 13-3 run to hold a 48-39 edge. Boshears converted a couple of free throws with 7:35 to go to carve it down to 48-41, but that’s the closest it would be the rest of the night. Oak Ridge had a five point possession that included a field goal, a foul shot and two technical foul free throws giving the Wildcats their largest lead so far at 53-41, and the game was never the same.

After Campbell’s last lead, Oak Ridge outscored the Cougars 33-11. A five-minute dry spell in the final quarter was the clincher for Campbell.

Boshears led the way for Campbell with 14 points followed by a dozen from Walden. Devin Jones chipped in nine with six points coming from Brady, five from John Long and one point from Bryson Horton. Boshears, Brady and Walden were named to the all-tourney team.

Oak Ridge hosts Hardin Valley Academy on Saturday at 7pm while Campbell (14 & 13) is home with William Blount (20 & 11) at the same time in round one of the regional tournament. WLAF will have all the live radio and TV coverage.
