LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Campbell Culture Coalition Executive Director Manuel Mesa was the guest speaker at the South Campbell County Rotary Club meeting Tuesday.

Mesa spoke about several grant projects the Campbell Culture Coalition is working on in area elementary schools. The first project is taking place for fifth graders at all the elementary schools and is called “Seeding for Food Security.” A total of 351 fifth graders will get a vegetable grow kit with seeds, instructions and information. According to Mesa, six of the eight elementary schools have already been done. “This is a great project and we’re very excited about it,” Mesa said.

Another project taking place at Wynn Elementary and Elk Valley Elementary is called “Strung Together.” This project is teaching fourth and fifth graders about homemade instruments. Children will build single string cigar box guitars under the Instruction of local artist Charlotte Underwood. The program is connected to LaFollette native and string band legend Howard Louie Bluie Armstrong, who also built his own instruments growing up in the area.

“Several Instruments built by the kids will be on display at the justice center,” Mesa said.

Other artwork by area student artists is also on display at the justice center.

“We have so much talent here in Campbell County and we want to support that,” Mesa said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/23/2022-6AM)
