Chief Gregg’s escort clears the Towe String Road intersection on Monday afternoon.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – February 14, 1974, is the day late retired La Follette Fire Chief Wayne Gregg began his 36 year career with the City of La Follette. Gregg passed away Monday morning at a Knoxville hospital and received a fire and police escort back home later in the day.

“We’re going to meet him at the interstate and escort him back home,” said LFD Chief Jimmy Pack. Around 1pm Monday, units led the way from Caryville to La Follette as traffic stopped or moved over allowing the procession room to quickly keep on moving.

Gregg was promoted to captain from firefighter on October 18, 1980. From there, he was promoted to assistant fire chief in April 1985 and soon became chief later than year in August serving until January 3, 2001.

Wayne Gregg served a distinguished career with the La Follette Fire Department.

The veteran firefighter retired as chief and became the City’s Code Enforcement Officer and Fire Marshall. Gregg officially retired on May 17, 2010.

WE KNOW WAYNE WAY BACK IN CHURCH WITH HIM AND JUDY AT FIRST INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH…WAYNE WAS A MEMBER OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE’S GROUP…WE HAVE MANY GREAT MEMORIES WITH WAYNE….WE HAD A HALLOWEEN PARTY AND HE ATTENTED AS A COWBOY…WE HAVE HOME MOVIES OF WAYNE SLINGING THAT GUN WITH HIS HIPS A SWAYING…IT WAS SUCH A GOOD TIME…WAYNE WAS ALWAYS AN HUMBLE KID….AND KIND TO EVERYONE…ALWAYS SLOW TALKING….HE WILL BE MISSED AS WE HAVE THOUGHTS OF THE YEARS AGO….PRAYERS AND LOVE SENT TO THE FAMILY AND HIS FIRE BUDDIES SAY GOOD BY TO WAYNE…WHAT A GREAT SALUTE AS THEY BROUGHT HIM HOME TO LAFOLLETTE….
