LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – David Hicks life story in print has only been out since November, and it’s already touched lots of lives and is now benefiting local organizations. Hicks vowed from the beginning that proceeds from “To Be Somebody” would be donated to a worthy cause, and donations were presented this morning at the WLAF studio.

“We’ve sold several hundred copies, and I just ordered 250 more,” said Hicks, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Jim Pierce with the Campbell County Cancer Association was on hand to accept Hicks’ donation to the association. “This donation will help quite a few people; more than you’ll believe. Right now we’re working with about 50 patients, and this gracious donation will go a long way,” said Pierce.

“Our van has more than 350,000 on it, and we’re trying to get a new one,” said Jellico Honor Guard Commander Danny McCulley. “David’s generous gift is a big help, and we’re very thankful to David for helping us,” McCulley added.

Each organization received a check for $1,000.

Author Jocelyn Woods Griffo attended Hicks check presentation ceremony and expressed her pleasure at how the community has responded. “It (the book) appeals to everyone who lives here, and they are able to identify with David’s life story,” said Woods Griffo. “To know that he has overcome so many obstacles in his life for success, means there’s hope for anyone who wants to follow his model,” Woods Griffo noted.

“David is an amazing person, and it’s been a great journey for me to get to know him and work on this project,” said Woods Griffo.

The book is available at all Campbell County public libraries and Katie’s Restaurant and sells for $20. Hicks has more appearances ready to be scheduled including Wynn and White Oak Schools. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 01/28/2022-1PM)
