JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – It was the game that wouldn’t end. Campbell nipped Powell in Tuesday night’s second overtime on Brown Court to claim its first district win of the season. On a night when there was no shortage of drama, the Cougars won in dramatic fashion, 93 to 89. Watch the all the highlights on demand HERE from WLAF.

With just seconds to go, and Campbell up 91-89, Spencer Boshears could not knock down two free throws after a Devon Jones miss of a driving lay up. During the free throws, football star Will Lester was inserted into the lineup for the next defensive trip and put his linebacker skills to good use as he leaped high on the move and intercepted a pass right in front of a Panther at the bucket. The outlet pass went to Boshears and quickly to Long who drove to the bucket to seal the game with a lay in.

This blurry photo of Will Lester’s interception of a Powell pass clearly helped seal Campbell’s win on Tuesday night. John Long, below and left, took Lester’s interception to the bucket to give Campbell a 93-89 (2 OT) win over Powell on Brown Court.

A pair of juniors, Devon Jones and John Long, led the Cougar charge with 22 points each. Eighteen of Long’s points came after halftime. Spencer Boshears tallied 17 as a dozen came from Zac Brady. Jack Leach and Nate Walden had eight points a piece while David Adkins scored three and Will Lester had one point.

Campbell improves to 7 & 8 as it picked up its first win in the district. In District 3-AAAA, the Cougars are 2 & 1. Both district losses were at away venues; West and Karns.

The Lady Cougars lost their grip on first place in the district after falling to Powell, now alone at the top of the district standings. Powell won the grudge match 38-34. The Lady Cougars slip to 11 & 4 – 2 & 1.

Senior Cora Browning and Freshman Karlie Whited carried Campbell with 12 points each. Lacey Pemberton chipped in eight followed by two from Bailey Gillum.

The home stand continues on Friday for Campbell as Oak Ridge comes to town. The Lady Wildcats, also losers to Powell, are 6 & 8 in all games and 2 & 1 in the district. The Oak Ridge Wildcats are 14 & 2 overall and sport a 3 & 0 mark in District 3-AAAA.
