CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – At last night’s Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen, a large safety concern was discussed about a Main Street building. Codes Officer Lisa Crumpley presented a picture of a white brick building on Main Street, where the back of the building has separated and is leaning outward. Crumpley expressed concerned to the board for the safety of the public due to the structural issue.

She reported to the board that she has called the building owner but has not received a call back prior to the meeting. The building owner has been notified twice, once by the current codes officer and once by the previous codes officer that the building is not safe to occupy. The board discussed addressing the immediate safety concern and agreed to put up concrete barriers in front of the building temporarily to keep the public away and safety tape behind the building. Ultimately the board agreed to give the owner notice that he had until Friday to address the issue, at that point if he does not address the issue, the town will step in and demolish the building. The owner of the property will then be responsible for clean up of the debris pile left by demolishing the building.

Mayor Bobby Stooksbury shared with the board that the town has received a drawing of the proposed new northbound exit 134 ramp. The new ramp will have three lanes, two lanes for traffic heading to LaFollette and one lane for Caryville bound traffic. A possible start date for the project has not been announced yet. He also updated the board about the storage lot for Goad Motorsports on Main Street. Originally the lot was meant to be short term, however progress on the new building site at exit 141 has suffered some setbacks but the owner hopes to be moved by summer.
