CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Weaver saw the driver of an orange Toyota Tacoma fail to maintain his lane as he entered Hwy 116 in Caryville last Saturday. Weaver attempted to stop the truck, but the driver of the Toyota did not stop instead it reached speeds of 120 mph in a 45 mph zone evading Weaver. The vehicle then turned all the lights off and drove through a yard just before the Vasper Baptist Church, according to a report from the sheriff’s department.

Just before 11pm, Weaver was able to make contact with the driver and place him under arrest. The driver identified as Matthew Tyler Cardwell had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from him. Weaver asked Cardwell if he would perform standardized field sobriety test, and he declined the tests.

An inventory of Cardwell’s vehicle revealed a .22 Magnum revolver under the steering wheel. Cardwell was transported to the jail where he was read the Tennessee Implied Consent for Blood and/or breathe. He refused to provide a sample.

Cardwell, 26, 876 Hillvale Road, Andersonville was charged with failure to maintain lane, speeding, felony evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence (DUI), violation implied consent law and possession of handgun under the influence.
