SPEEDWELL, TN (WLAF) – The second annual Speedwell Academy Car Show is tomorrow.

The Historic Speedwell Academy will host the LA Cruizers Car Club on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11am to 3 pm. People can tour the academy and check out classic cars at the event.

The academy will be selling hot dog lunches, including chips, hotdog and a drink. There will also be homemade desserts available for sale, along with academy T-shirts.  All proceeds benefit the upkeep of the Historic Speedwell Academy and help keep part of the community’s heritage alive.

Ole Red just might make it back to this year’s show.

The academy was founded by George Shutter, a German immigrant from Pennsylvania. Originally an all-male school, it went coed around the turn of the 20th century, and both boys and girls attended. It was at this time it became known as the Speedwell Academy. During the Civil War, the academy was the headquarters for General Felix K. Zollicoffer. During later Civil War years, it was used as a hospital. The upstairs of the building functioned as a church for many years as well.

It is currently maintained by a board of trustees that have formed a nonprofit corporation called Speedwell Academy Incorporated. Its sole purpose is the “restoration and preservation of the building.”
