Daniel Webster Herron the “Sarge”, age 87 of Jacksboro, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2021, at LaFollette Medical Center. Daniel was born in Wolf Mountain, Byson City, NC on August 23, 1934. Daniel moved to Caryville, TN in 1939 and went to school in a one room schoolhouse in Turley, TN. 10 days before his 18th birthday, Daniel joined the United States Air Force. He entered service on August 13, 1951, and retired August 31, 1976, after 25 years of service. Dan was baptized in Cove Lake in his Air Force uniform before shipping out to England, there he met the love of his life Rita Dixson. They raised 5 children. Most of his career in the USAF, he was military police. In 1970 he was a US Marshall, and part of his duties were to eliminate terrorist. During his time in the service, he traveled around the world and visited 80 countries in which his favorite was Hong Kong. Dan and Rita spent 39 years in California, and he took part in the Boy Scouts and was a member of Security Police Sport as a player or coach. Daniel is an honorary graduate of Topeka Kansas Police Academy in 1964 conducted by the Bureau of Investigation directed by Dr. West. In addition, Dan was also a Customs Service Agent and was invited to the Vice Presidents Gallery of U.S. Senate Chambers. In 2005 Dan and Rita moved back to Campbell County, TN. After being in remission and cancer free for 21 years, Rita’s cancer was back. Dan and Rita went back to California to be with family. Dan lost his lovely wife Rita March 3, 2014. After being married to Rita for over 62 years and being totally lost without her, Dan came back to Campbell County. Dan will be put to rest beside Rita in the Knoxville Military Cemetery, and he will be given full Military Honors by the Campbell County Honor Guard.
