LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – The South Campbell County Rotary Club is once again sponsoring a “bed building day” with non-profit Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). The event is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 2, at 9am, in the Food City parking lot.

Each year, SHP holds a nation wide movement called Bunks Across America where chapters of the organization all across the country hold “build days” to build as many beds as possible. These beds are then donated to area youth who do not have a bed. Beds are donated complete with blankets, sheets, pillows and pillow cases, for which SHP also holds drives. For the second year, the South Campbell County Rotary Club is sponsoring the annual Build Day for the local SHP chapter. This is the third build day for Campbell County.  Beds will benefit local children.

“We think it’s a wonderful program and opportunity to help area youth and Rotary is thankful to be able to sponsor this event. We hope to have a big turnout for this year’s event,” said South Campbell County Rotary Club President Rayma Daugherty.

Here is a look after one bed is assembled from Bill Thompson (L) and John Polly (R). This May 2019 bed build netted 10 beds.

Bill Thompson started the Campbell County chapter of SHP three years ago and said it has been an “amazing experience.”

“A lot of these kids are sleeping on the floor or on couches; Having a bed can make a huge difference in the quality of life for a child,” Thompson said.

The local chapter covers Campbell County, Anderson County and Knox County. Donations made locally are used locally. Anyone can participate, even without previous woodworking experience. To sign up for the Sat., Oct. 2 Build Day or to make bedding donations of new blankets, sheets and pillows, contact local SHP chapter leader Bill Thompson at 407-678-2638 or email him at bill.thompson@shpbeds.org.
