PUBLISHER’S NOTE: The following was submitted by a WLAF reader.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – Hello. My name is Melanie, and I’ve been in Campbell County since 1983.  The vaccination rate in our county is not good enough.  We baby boomers are doing pretty well at 70 percent, but you millennials and your parents (our kids) aren’t.  Your recent numbers are 55 percent and 57 percent.  I know what you are thinking, and you’re correct.  We are more vulnerable, for sure.

But what you don’t know is that when we were in elementary school there was a crippling disease called Polio.  President FDR had it and remained in a wheelchair until he died.  Nobody wanted that.  So we stuck out our arm and got the polio vaccine.  Our parents thought it was a smart thing to do.  Polio was then eliminated.  We got the smallpox vaccine, too.  Look up that lovely disease and see what it does to your face. And then there was no more smallpox.  You couldn’t travel to other parts of the world without this shot.  So for us boomers, this is now our third vaccine. And as far as I know I’m not aware of anyone growing a third eye, an extra arm, and nobody was covered up in anything creepy either.

So from high school to age 60 you need to just suck it up, stick your arm out and get vaccinated.  The rest of Campbell County will appreciate it, and we will all be freer to roam about and mingle without fear.  And FYI, and this is important, approximately 90 percent of all COVID-19 hospitalizations are the unvaccinated.

Although I’m not from the medical profession at all, these COVID shots have got to help with all the variants that are going around.  It can’t hurt. Right?

Make your life and ours easier.  Get the vaccine ASAP.  Go to Walmart, Terry’s Pharmacy, Riggs Drugs, the County Health Dept or call 423-562-8351 if you have any questions or concerns. The vaccine is free.  Do your part.  High schoolers, millennials and your parents need to commit.  Just go and get vaccinated.

Thank you for listening. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/24/2021-6AM)

  1. Well said! I’d like to add that many hospitals are starting to ration care due to this issue. Don’t take my word, just Google it and you will see. It would be a shame to have someone you care about not be treated for a heart attack, stroke, or other problem because there aren’t enough beds at the hospital. Please do your part as a member of our community to help keep all of us safer. And if you are thinking you are not going to get this virus or it won’t be too bad, think again. This virus does not care if you are young or old.

  2. If this vaccine actually prevented the recipient from getting Covid and didn’t have such horrible side effects and was thoroughly tested and vetted like the polio, smallpox, measles, mumps, etc vaccines were, maybe more of us would be willing to get it. It is still in experimental stages!

    1. Susan, I agree the vaccine does not prevent the disease. However, it does help reduce the severity of most cases…not all…but most. The vast majority of deaths now are people who are unvaccinated.

Regarding your comment about experimental: The Pfizer vaccine is fully FDA approved so I encourage you to seek that version. As before, don’t take my word for it. Research and you will find this to be true. Stay safe!
