LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – The Campbell County Children’s Center “Taking Steps to Prevent Child Abuse 1K Walk/Run” is set for tomorrow, Wed., April 21.

In a recent center survey, a child’s mother stated “Thank you for showing my son that he is not the one at fault.”  April is Child Abuse Prevention month, a time to act collectively to raise awareness and empower victims throughout our communities.

In lieu of the annual Child Abuse Prevention Luncheon, the Campbell County Children’s Center in collaboration with District Attorney General Jared Effler will be hosting their first “Taking Steps to Prevent Child Abuse” 1K Walk/Run.   The event coincides with National Victims of Crime week which is Wed., April 21.  The walk will be held in two place with the first walk beginning at 9 am at Lee Sergeant Park, LaFollette and the final walk beginning at 1 pm at Indian Mountain State Park, Jellico.

There are two ways to participate in this community event:  a $250 business sponsorship or individuals can register with a $25 walk/run entry fee. The event t-shirt front is being designed by a local middle school student and the back will list the names of sponsors. Sponsorship includes:

  • Four (4) event t-shirts
  • Signage to be displayed during both walks
  • Business name listed back of on event t-shirt
  • Media coverage

The Campbell County Children’s Center was founded in 2001 to provide a safe haven for sexually and physically abused children.  Instead of being interviewed countless times at different locations, a child can tell their story to one caring and specially trained professional in a child-friendly environment where the child knows he or she will be safe. 

Now more than ever, the Children’s Center needs support, according to Tracy Davis, who said the organization has been extremely busy in all three counties that they serve (Campbell, Claiborne & Union).  “We have planned this walk to help meet our budgetary needs while limiting contact and maintaining social distancing,” Davis said.  For more information visit the Children’s Center website at www.campbellcountychildrenscenter.org or Facebook @CampbellCountyChildrensCenter.
