LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – What’s being called an indoor recreation facility/multi-purpose building is in the works.

City of La Follette Recreation Director Johnny Byrge said the new 10,000 square foot facility will be constructed where the skate park currently sits next to Liberty Park. The skate park will be relocated to the East End Community Center grounds.

The new facility will be constructed on the campus of Liberty Park, the West End Community Center, Splash Park and La Follette Library.

“I am happy to be part of this much needed facility for our youth that will be beneficial for generations to come and for our mayor and city council past and present for taking action to make this possible,” said Byrge.

Byrge describes the facility as one that will accommodate mostly sports activities from batting cages to gymnastics and dance classes. “Other types of events could also be hosted there,” added Byrge. There will be a small concession area, too.

The one level facility awaits state approval with construction expected to begin after July. A recent capitol outlay note covers the anticipated cost of under $200,000. Byrge is expecting the project to be completed by early 2022. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/05/2021-6AM)
