STINKING CREEK, TN (WLAF) – The replacement of the nearly 100-year- old bridge that once crossed Stinking Creek continues. The historic bridge was taken out back in November, and the task of replacing it continues.

Hannah Baird shares this photo of the last day the bridge was open, November 16, 2020.
Progress on the new bridge is shown here from March 30, 2021.

The Baird family lives beside the bridge on Old Stinking Creek Road, and Buddy Baird and his daughter Hannah, a high school senior, have been keeping WLAF viewers abreast of the progress since WLAF’s first story of the project published late last year.

“Not bad” was the response from Buddy when asked how the weekend flooding that ravaged Campbell County, in particular on the north side, affected the bridge replacement efforts.

Marked beems bound for Campbell County were so noted.

“They had to place more rocks on the side of the road where there is a small stream of water.  The upper side of the center post of the bridge has lots of brush stuck to it.  Other than that, it is good,” said Buddy Baird.

“The water was really high (over the weekend) on the bridge posts.  We watched the creek all day, it became a raging river.  It was scary to watch out our window,” added Buddy Baird.

The old bridge stood from 1929 until 2020.

Campbell County Road Superintendent Ron Dilbeck told WLAF in November that the road will be closed for an unknown amount of time while the bridge is being replaced.
