Wlaf1450LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – The Bosch Community Fund has awarded Postmark LaFollette Arts, Culture and History Center, located at 119 S. Tennessee Avenue, LaFollette, funds to present a STEM project within the Campbell County area. The project, “We Are the Future”, will include five STEM teachers working with teams of 3-5 students in the 4th through 8th grades of the Campbell County School system, including one group of homeschooled students.
The “We Are the Future” teams will delve into ways to improve their future in Campbell County based on a specific group of questions. These questions were chosen from student responses to Postmark’s previously hosted Smithsonian/MOMs/Humanities Tennessee project Crossroads: Change in Rural America attended by these school grades in 2019. They will work directly with their STEM/mentor teachers for guidance and leadership.
The groups will meet via Zoom or in person as possible with social distance and masking in accordance with current CDC guidelines. The sessions will begin in March with a project finale on May 16.
This award impacts the community in several positive ways. Teachers/mentors will be paid stipends for their time and expertise. Each student team will receive funds to develop their solutions for improving the future, and have the responsibility of managing their project with a budget, a plan of action and a results-oriented outcome. Economic development, long-term planning, research and development skills and community organization are among the potential positive impacts of the Bosch Community grant. .
Postmark LaFollette will host a reception to showcase the results of each team’s work . Additionally, the organization will also coordinate the opportunity for these teams to present their solutions to a variety of local entities such as the Rotary and chamber and in school assemblies, if possible.
