JELLICO, TN (WLAF) – Speeding cost John Leonard Smith a trip to jail. Late on Monday, Feb. 15, Deputy Joseph Weaver saw a silver Infiniti on Sunset Trail in Jellico at South Florence Street.

The vehicle was going 35 mph in a 25-mph zone. When Weaver stopped the car, he found it had an expired registration and was unable to provide ownership or insurance for the vehicle. Weaver requested a K9 to perform an open-air sniff around the vehicle. Sgt. K9 handler Wayne Barton arrived with his K9 partner Mya. K9 Mya alerted on the driver side door of the Infiniti, and Barton along with Jellico City Police Assistant Chief Raymond Surber conducted a vehicle search, according to the sheriff’s report.

The search revealed a clear and red capsule filled with a fine brown powder believed to be Heroin in the center console of the vehicle. Deputies also located three more empty capsules of the same color that did not contain a fine brown powder, a purple and white capsule that also had a fine brown powder believed to be Heroin.

Smith, 32, 130 Low Wood Lane, Newcomb is charged with speeding, violation of TN financial law, violation registration law and possession of schedule I controlled substance. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/25/2021-6AM)
