JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – World War II Veteran Hugh Boshears turned 95- years- old Monday. The Campbell County native served in the United States Army in Germany during the war.

According to his son, Don Boshears, Hugh has been an avid farmer his whole life. He grew up on the family farm in Mt. Paran and to this day still lives in the same house he was born in. Hugh was from a big family with seven brothers and three sisters.

Here’s a photo from today on Hugh’s birthday, his 95th celebration.

The one story that son Don Boshears recalls from his dad’s time overseas is when Hugh was on parade in uniform and saw several German women nearby milking a cow. Having grown up on a farm in Campbell County, Hugh must have been missing home because he rushed right over and took over milking that cow. “Dad said those women got a little upset at the American milking their cow,” Don Boshears said.

After coming home from the war, Hugh went to work for Y12 in Oak Ridge. After retiring from Y12, he continued to work the family farm. He had four children, two boys and two girls. “Family and farming has always been a huge part of his life,” said his son Don Boshears.

From all of us here at WLAF, a very happy birthday to Hugh Boshears, and thank you for your service sir! (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/22/2021-2PM)

WWII teenager turns 91

Boshears was born on Washington’s Birthday

By Jim Freeman

“I’ve been here my whole life,” says Hugh Boshears.  And except for his two years in the US Army, he’s been right there, or not far away, on the family farm at Mount Paran.

Hugh Boshears greeted us with a grin and a handshake on his 91st birthday in 2017.

In the 1940s, Boshears quit school at Jacksboro High School to serve in the Army which included time in Germany during WWII.  When the teenage soldier finished his tour of duty, he was right back on the farm and attending JHS.

It was that second time around at JHS when he met a girl named Frankie Terry from Little Cove Creek.  “That’s why she’s so much younger than me,” he laughed.  They’ve been married 70-years now.

We caught up with the sweethearts, Frankie and Hugh, in their kitchen.

The Boshears raised their family right there in the house where Hugh was born.  Don, Pat, Carolyn, and Garvin are their children.

Boshears worked 30-years at Oak Ridge all the while tending to his farm.  That’s not a very long time for a man who’s lived now for 91-years.

Happy Birthday, Hugh!  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 02/23/2017-6AM)
