CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher West responded to a call of a possible overdose not long before daybreak one morning last week.  The call took him to Hiawatha Lane in Caryville.  When he arrived, an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit was already on the scene, but the suspect refused medical treatment. The EMT told West he found the suspect in the driver seat of the car.  The engine was running, and the car was in park sitting in the middle of the road blocking a driveway.  The  EMT turned off the engine and removed the keys.

When West spoke with suspect, later identified as Teri Ann Oden, he asked her if she had consumed any alcohol or taken any illegal substance, to which she allegedly said “no.”  While the EMT was talking with Oden, she began to reach around the vehicle into different compartments and into her pockets.  West noticed that she had pin-point bloodshot and glassy eyes and slurred speech, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.  When she asked to step out of the vehicle, she began to be non-compliant, yelling and flailing her arms in an aggressive manner.  Once again, she was asked to step out of the 2011 Buick Regal,  and as she attempted to get out, West noticed that she was allegedly having difficulty, showing poor coordination.  The deputy and the EMT helped her to get out of the mid-sized car, and once outside the vehicle, they turned loose of her and she fell to the ground, according to the report.  When West attempted to handcuff Oden, she resisted and pulled her arm away from him. He was able to handcuff her and place her into his patrol car where she continued to be non-compliant.

Oden’s Buick was parked in the middle of the road and was partially blocking a driveway prompting West to move it from the road and returned to his patrol car.  At this point, Oden was asked to perform a standardized field sobriety test and she agreed. As West and the EMT were attempting to help her out of the patrol car, she continued to be non-compliant, arguing, yelling and attempting to pull her arms away.  Once she was out of the patrol car, she was unable to stand on her own.

Oden, 56, 256 Saluda Woods Place, West Columbia, SC was charged with driving under the influence (DUI). (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 10/29/2020-6AM)
