LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – An incident that occurred in July resulted in the Monday night arrest of a La Follette man.Based on sheriff’s office reports, 31-year- old Derrick Tyler Stanifer was allegedly involved in an argument with a neighbor during a cookout at an apartment complex on the evening of July 18.  The report said one neighbor told Stanifer to “go to back inside his apartment and cool off.”

Stanifer came back out of his apartment with an American Flag and began allegedly spitting on the flag, blowing his nose on it and then setting it on fire, the report said.  One witness showed the investigating officer, Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Phillips, a mobile phone video recording of the lighting of the flag on fire.

Just before midnight on Monday night, Deputy Joseph Weaver went to a home on Hollifield Drive in an attempt to serve and outstanding warrant on Stanifer for the offense of “desecration of an American Flag,” according to the report.

Jail records reveal that Stanifer was arrested by Weaver and is free this morning on a $10,000 bond.  He is due in court in November.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 10/15/2020-6AM)
