CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN (WLAF) – Over about a six-hour span, Norris Dam was shut down because a suspicious bag was discovered on the dam’s bridge.  In a tweet from TVA, TVA Police asked for assistance from the Knox County Bomb Squad out of what it described as “out of an abundance of caution.”

The bag was spotted around 3 pm on Thursday, and deputies with the Campbell County’s Sheriff’s Department were called in to provide support at the scene.  Deputies and TVA Police closed off access to U.S. Highway 441 at the dam.  The FBI was also called to the dam.

The TVA tweet reported that “It was determined that there is no danger to the public or facility, and the area is safe.  The road reopened just before 9 pm Thursday night.

The dam, opened in 1936, straddles the Campbell County-Anderson County line. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 12/27/2019-6AM)
