JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – The Campbell County Board of Education elected Brent Lester as the new chairman on Tuesday night and selected Noah Smith as the vice chairman.

Lester was previously the vice chairman while Smith is the newest member of the board, having won a special election last fall to replace late board member Mike Orick. Both were elected by a vote of 8-0 with Jeffrey Miller abstaining on each while Ronnie Lasley was absent from the meeting.

The board quickly ran through the rest of its agenda, approving all minutes, budget amendments and a long list of amended board policies by unanimous votes. The board also voted 8-1 to advertise for bids on two 4WD trucks for the maintenance department. Miller cast the only “no” vote on both motions.

Director Jennifer Fields along with other board members expressed their appreciation to outgoing chair Crystal Creekmore for her service. Fields also reported that Nancy Lay has been recognized by the State Rural Principal’s Network, the latest Campbell County school principal to earn that honor.

She also noted that Jacksboro Elementary School, as part of its science curriculum, has developed a vegetable garden and entered the produce they grew at the Tennessee Valley Fair, winning three first place ribbons.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 09/11/2019-6AM
