CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- The Town of Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to raise the town’s garbage fee to $12 at last night’s monthly meeting.

The garbage fee had previously been $8 a month. However, Mayor David Chambers explained that the current fee is not sufficient to cover the sanitation budget. He continued that he had spoken with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) who recommended through a mathematical formula that town needed to raise the garbage fee to $12 monthly to fund the sanitation budget. Alderman Lloyd Lawson and Alderman Eric Jones voted no to raising the fee.

A brief discussion was held about phase two of the all-inclusive park. Alderman Beth Lawson told the board the proposed cost of the park has risen since they began proposing the park. There is a grant for $77,000 to cover some of the cost, however it appears the town will need to come up with an additional $25,000 to complete the project.  The board will need to make a decision soon about the project to keep the grant.

The board approved applying for two grants. The first grant is from Firehouse Subs, if awarded the department will purchase a combi tool with the funds. The next grant is the Judy Housley Safety Partners matching grant through Public Entity Partners. The grant is for $3,000 with a 50/50 match. If awarded the grant could be used for the police, fire and/or street department.

The board approved a $3,000 donation to the Louie Bluie Festival that will be held on September 20 at Cove Lake State Park.

In final business the board discussed the need to change chapter 2, section 7-204 of the Caryville Municipal Code. This chapter pertains to storage of explosives, flammable liquids, etc.  The need for the change comes after the discovery of trucks with flammable liquids parking in a residential area. The town’s attorney Adam Bullock stated he would work on getting the changes made to the code and bring it back to the board for approval. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-07/15/2025-6AM)
