Multiple drug charges stem from moving violation
LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Last week, Sgt. Isaiah Lloyd with the LaFollette Police Department saw a blue Ford F150 pick up truck fail to stop at the stop sign at West Beech Street and Jacksboro Pike. Sgt. Lloyd activated sirens and initiated a traffic stop. Upon speaking to the driver who identified himself as Douglas Thompson, he stated that he ran the stop sign because no traffic was coming and that he had left his wallet at home but did have a license.
The sergeant asked Thompson if he had any marijuana in the vehicle due to the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to a report from the LaFollette Police Department. Thompson stated that he had just smoked marijuana before leaving his house on his way to work. The man was asked to step out of the vehicle for a probable cause vehicle search. Thompson asked if he gave Lloyd the marijuana, would he allow him to continue on to work. Once outside the vehicle Thompson was asked if he had any weapons. At that point, Thompson went to his open truck door and reached for his jacket where he stated he had a pistol. Thompson was redirected outside the vehicle where he pulled marijuana from his pants.
While conducting a probable cause vehicle search, three separate sandwich bags, two clear and one yellow, were found containing a total weight of 26 grams of marijuana along with a grinder containing marijuana residue. In Thompson’s jacket pocket was a loaded, allegedly stolen, Derringer .38 caliber pistol along with a cloth case containing a clear pipe with burnt white residue, another cloth case containing a red sandwich bag with 11.2 grams of a white crystal substance suspected to be methamphetamine was recovered, according to the report. Three empty red sandwich bags matching the suspected methamphetamine bag were located in the center console.
It was confirmed through dispatch that Thompson did not have a drivers license. Current vehicle and insurance information was found in the vehicle. The window tint on the truck was also darker than the legal limit.
Douglas Michael Thompson, 60, 906 Knoxville Hollow Rd, LaFollette was charged with mfg/del/sell schedule II controlled substance, mfg/del/sell schedule VI controlled substance, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and requirement for stop sign. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/19/2024-6AM)

The drug problem in Campbell County is a major problem and issue.
Running stop signs and going through red lights is a common, everyday occurrence. If I see it, I would think law enforcement also sees it. Law enforcement needs to stop these violators and issue tickets, fines, and court dates. How about also impounding their vehicles.
Campbell County citizens have the right to be safe. Let’s get drug offenders and careless, reckless drivers off our roads and put where they belong…behind bars.
I’m curious what kind of job he has. The thought of somebody on drugs driving is bad enough. I hate to think what might have happened to someone in another car or a fellow employee if he had made it to work. Thank you Sgt. Loyd for catching him.
