LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – The agenda for the next City of La Follette meeting is here.

From Tuesday afternoon’s workshop: At the LaFollette City Council workshop, the biggest topic on the agenda was an animal control update. City Administrator Stan Foust told the council issues with the animal shelter appeared to be ongoing. He continued that it had reached the point of slanderous against the City of LaFollette Animal Control Officer and the City. Mayor Cliff Jennings reported that the city had been in talks with the shelter about taking it over. Jennings stated the city only wants the same rights as other municipalities, others are not being billed like the City of LaFollette is being billed for animals they take in. The city alleges that the animal shelter is not holding up its deal with the city.

The next topic of interest was the possibility of the city establishing its own ambulance service through the fire department. Fire Chief Jimmy Pack spoke with the council about what it would take to get an ambulance service up and running. He reported that they would need four ambulances, a building and additional staff for the ambulances. The cost of each ambulance would be $300,000 and it would take 9-12 months to get everything up and running.

Conversation about the ice rink continued. Last month, Parks and Recreation Director Johnny Byrge was asked by the council to put together a cost estimate to purchase and set up the rink. The rink would cost about $18,000 with an additional $40,000 to get everything going. The topic was tabled until more information could be gathered about tear down and set up of the rink.

Two promotions are the on the agenda for the regular meeting, July 2, beginning with Aaron Sexton to a full time patrolman effective July 13 and Donald Goddard to a full time recreation department worker.

At next week’s regular monthly meeting, Ordinance 2024-05 prohibiting billboards in the city will have a final reading. Ordinance 2024-06 amending the LaFollette Fire Departments Title 7 of the City of LaFollette Municipal Code will have a first reading.

A representative from Diamond B Rodeo was present at the workshop to present checks to four charitable organizations. The first check was given to Meals on Wheels, the second check went to Campbell County Special Olympics, the third check went to Postmark LaFollette and the final check was given to the Campbell County Senior Citizens Center. Each check was for $500.
