On this Throwback Thursday, WLAF’s Charlie Hutson shares a Lafollette memory

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Back in the day, one of the favorite vantage points for a photo of Lafollette was from the Southern Railroad trestle. The trestle crossed West Central Avenue between Nevada Avenue on the north side of Central Avenue and Depot Street on the south side, the side street. In the foreground of the picture is Depot Street.

There is no telling how many pictures have been made from this trestle; just like this shot from the 1930s of Central Avenue looking east from the south end side of the trestle. Notice how the parking arrangement was back then, parking on each side and a row down the center of Central Avenue, and traffic is still rolling east and west. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 06/13/2024-6AM)

  1. I wonder if this was a parade or other special occasion. I’ve never seen LaFollette this crowded!

  2. I can remember going down town in the late 60s and early 70s on Saturdays and it was always crowded. Everyone used to hang out on the corner of Riggs Drug Store and on the Viaduct and go to the Cherokee Theater.
