The final U-S combat troops were removed from Vietnam in 1973; 50 years ago.

Wednesday was banner hanging day as La Follette Fire Captain Dusty Davis puts Sergeant Melvin Doyle Sweat’s Local Heroes banner for Vietnam Veterans in place high above East Central Avenue. The banners remain posted through November 15.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – The La Follette Veterans Day Parade will be held on Sat., Nov. 11, beginning at 2pm.  The parade route will travel along Central Avenue beginning at the La Follette Methodist Church and ending at the Sonic.

The parade committee is under the leadership of Ed Housley, chairman and president of Chapter 1148 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.  Fund raising continues as well as planning to make this year’s parade bigger and better.

This year’s parade will recognize and honor all Veterans but especially the Vietnam Veterans on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War for the United States. The final US combat troops were removed from Vietnam in 1973.  In commemoration of the end of U-S involvement and working with the City of La Follette, the Local Heroes banners for Vietnam Veterans are displayed in downtown La Follette from Nov. 1 through Nov. 15.
