LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Last night at the city’s monthly workshop, drainage issues were on the mind of Council Member Ann Thompson. Thompson suggested the city look at contracting out its storm drain maintenance.  “Our street department doesn’t have the knowledge or the manpower. They have too much to do,” continued Thompson.    She went on to say that the towns of Jacksboro and Caryville have someone contracted for their maintenance and requested City Administrator Jimmy Jeffries speak with the towns to see how they handle this issue.

At its regular monthly meeting next week, council will look at appointing members to beautification board (Tammy Miller) and 911 board (Matt Paul).  Quick Shop, formerly Kenny’s Pioneer, has applied for a beer permit and Zoyal Market, next to La Follette Middle School, has made a second application. Council discussed the location of Zoyal Market and its proximity to a church and a school.

Two ordinances and one resolution will be discussed. Ordinance 2019-03 amending the City of LaFollette Fire Protection Fund and Distribution of Funds will have its third and final reading. First reading of Ordinance 2019-04 approval of rezoning a section of property located between North 4th Street and North 6th Street from R-2 (residential) to C-1 (commercial) will be held.  Bob Fannon, owner of Riggs Drug, has requested the change to build a drug store on the property. Resolution 2019-10 amending the 2019-20 budget is on the agenda as well.

Police Chief Bill Rhoel updated council about the police policy for accreditation. The department has been working on this since Feb. 2017.  It’s about a three-year process, according to Rhoel. The accreditation can help the department with grants and can decrease the cost of liability insurance.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/30/2019-6AM-PHOTO COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
