La Follette Middle School spent a week hosting the best of the best in local youth basketball as the County Elementary Tournament took place in the Jerry Irwin Gymnasium on Vic King Court.     After a day out of school for snow delayed the start by a day on Monday and the preliminaries were out of the way, it was time for the title games.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Cardinals of Caryville won their fifth title in as many years when they defeated the Lady Bobcats of Valley View 24-4.  In that five year span, the Lady Cardinals have complied one of the most impressive collections of wins for any sport on any level in the county at 62-2.

The Cardinals had a tougher road to hoe in their title game against the Eagles of Jacksboro.  This Battle of the Birds junior division saw the Cardinals squeeze out a 29-23 win to claim the other half of the large school crown in the boys’ category.

In the small school division the Lady Bulldogs of Wynn took the girls’ title with a 23-12 win over the Lady Blue Devils of Jellico.  The boys division saw the Bobcats of White Oak defeat the Elks of Elk Valley 34-10 to land the boys championship.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 12/17/2018-6AM-PHOTO COURTESY OF RHONDA LONGMIRE)
