A routine radar set-up on I-75 in Campbell County wound up involving gunfire and a rambling high speed pursuit.   Just before 10 pm Friday night, Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Dakota Williams was running stationary radar at Mile Marker 153 when a KIA SUV (pictured above)  sped by southbound at 97 miles per hour, according to reports. Williams began a pursuit with lights and siren, but the red vehicle didn’t pull over.

At the Stinking Creek exit, number 144, the SUV exited  the road and headed north on I-75.  Once in pursuit in the northbound lanes, shots were fired from the SUV toward Williams’ cruiser.  The high rate speed chase continued to Exit 156, Rarity Mountain, where the KIA exited again.  This time, the driver oddly positioned his SUV in a manner as if he was looking for a better angle to shoot at Williams, but the momentary pause quickly returned to a pursuit, the report said.

No one was injured in the roughly half-hour high-speed pursuit on Friday night

At Mile Marker 153, another CCSD unit joined in in support of Williams’ efforts.  The pursuit raced back to Exit 141, the Huntsville-Oneida off ramp,  where the KIA SUV exited right onto the Howard Baker Highway and again positioned itself with an odd maneuver to have a better angle at deputies, report said. Deputies received more gunfire before the KIA sped away nearly hitting other vehicles.

Campbell County was assisted by deputies from Scott County.

The pursuit carried into Scott County and ended when the driver of the red SUV slammed on his brakes forcing contact with Chief Deputy Jeremy Goins’ patrol unit.  The collision forced the KIA from the roadway onto the shoulder where it stopped.  The man and woman inside the SUV ignored verbal commands from the officers and then were forcibly taken into custody.

Arrested were 38-year -old Benjamin Kevin Lewis and 32-year- old Cheyenne Nicole Judd.  Both listed the same Jasonville, Indiana, address as their home.  Lewis and Judd are charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.  Lewis also faces a felony evading arrest charge.  The investigation continues this morning with additional charges pending.

CCSD Detective-Sergeant John Long was one of the investigators on the Friday night scene in Scott County.

The pursuit and apprehension came to an end at 10:29 pm Friday night lasting approximately 36-minutes.  No shots were fired by any of the law enforcement involved including units from Scott County that assisted.  There were no injuries.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 12/15/2018-11:15AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE CAMPBELL COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT)
