The Campbell County Cougars fell in their season and home opener Tuesday night at John R.W. Brown Gym.  The Oneida Indians won 74 to 61.

“We never quit, and we can build on that,” said former Cougar Darrell Cox who started two freshmen and was without one returning starter, Carter Wells, in his debut as the new CCHS coach.

Cox told WLAF’s Josh Parker on the TCAT Wrap Up Show, “We had six items on our pregame list to accomplish tonight; 1 – Play together. 2 – Stay together. 3 – Talk. 4 – Rebound. 5 – Run. 6 – Communicate.  We were one for six.  But it’s OK.  It’s perfectly alright.”  He goes on to say that it was the first game back.  We have injuries we’re trying to deal with and work through and work players in who have just showed up after football season ended.  It’s a long season.  He adds, “We had some nice moments defensively.”

Carter Wells is recovering from a shoulder injury while Landon Addington is not full speed with a torn ACL, and Bryce Duncan is not quite 100% after breaking his back over the summer.

Freshmen Spencer Boshears and Nate Walden led the scoring for Campbell last night with 16 and 21-points respectively.  Walden fired up the impressive crowd as he launched a three-pointer from NBA range (22-feet) that ripped the ropes as Campbell quickly jumped on top 3 – 0.  Minutes later Boshears buried a right corner trey to give CCHS an early 6 – 2 edge.  Oneida proceeded to build a 21-point second-half lead only to see the Cougars claw back to make it interesting late.  Cox said with a laugh, “Their (the frosh) rookie season is over.  They’ve played one game now.”

Bryce Duncan and Jake Lane each had six points with John Arnold adding five.  Landon Addington scored three followed by two apiece from Drew Jordan and Lawson Shoun.

Campbell has a full day of basketball on Saturday with two games at William Blount High School just outside Maryville.  At 2 pm, CCHS plays the Walker Valley Mustangs from Cleveland followed by a 5 pm match-up with South-Doyle’s Cherokees.  The games are TV and website broadcasts only over the WLAF – B & M Tires Sports Network.  That’s over WLAF-TV 12 and 1450wlaf.com.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 11/14/2018-6AM-PHOTO COURTESY OF DAVID GRAHAM)
