In the 1990s, Highway 63 was named “General Carl W.  Stiner” highway.  It was on  September 13.  On that day, it was declared that every September 13 that follows will be forever known as “Carl Stiner” day in Campbell County.

I was there that day.  A light rain fell on Stiner at times as he addressed the large crowd.  One of his comments is etched in my mind.  He said, “When people ask who is or was Carl Stiner, tell them that he was just a farm boy who grew up in this valley and had the honor to serve the greatest country on earth.  Just tell them that.”

Stiner is a retired four-star general and was born and raised in La Follette.

He celebrated his 82 birthday last Friday.
